Course Description

What does sustainability sound like? How do the sounds around us and the sounds we create influence our way of being and interactions? This course introduces students to studies of sound and soundscapes through a multisensory anthropological and
ethnographic lens. We will especially tune our ears to aural encounters as shaped by/with the environment, sustainability, and language. Drawing inspiration from the fields of Anthropology and Sound Studies and soundwalk creators, we will analyze textual
and aural works and create our own. As a class, we will conceptualize the design and use of geo-located soundwalks as an ethnographic method and representational form. In addition to insightful aurally-oriented discussions, you will gain practical experience recording, creating, and editing sounds. These skills will flourish in the final geo-located soundwalk project where you will co-create and publish a soundwalk centered here in Bloomington.
