SustainCollins: Live + learn with like-minded students

SustainCollins, a partnership between Collins LLC, the Integrated Program in the Environment, and Sustain IU, is an action and education-oriented living-learning program dedicated to sustainability and the environment. SustainCollins is open to Collinsites of all majors who are interested in gaining professional skills, diving deep into environmental topics, and incorporating sustainability into their everyday lives.

SustainCollins students are members of the Collins Living-Learning Center. As a Collinsite, you’ll have access to all the amazing classes, trips, student groups, and resources at Collins. You’ll also participate in unique programming including:

Student Sustainability Project: Active participation in year-long, student-directed project (satisfying Q-project requirement, as part of the Q199 course) implementing a sustainability improvement on campus
Enrollment in Environmental Collins Seminar: Enrollment in MINIMUM of one (1) environment/sustainability-focused Collins Seminar class (satisfying Collins seminar requirement)
Volunteer Hours: Completion of 10 volunteer hours per semester (20/academic year) in student-selected community organizations
Engagement with Coordinators and Peer Mentors: Engagement with SustainCollins Coordinators (campus sustainability leaders who serve as mentors to SustainCollins residents) and Peer Mentor(s) (Collins LLC upperclassmen who serve as student project leads and plan additional programming for SustainCollins members).

Additional program offerings may include:

Speaker series with influential environmental leaders, including visiting scholars and local community leaders.
Programs offered through neighboring world-class University initiatives, including the Environmental Resilience Institute and the Food Institute
Others, as suggested by residents!

Eligibility

SustainCollins is open to students of all majors and disciplines who are interested in gaining professional skills, diving deep into environmental topics, and incorporating sustainability into their every-day lives. To join the program, students must live in Collins LLC. This program is open to all Collinsites interested in maintaining a sustainable dorm lifestyle with other peers. SustainCollins members must complete an additional Resident Agreement detailing membership requirements (information below).

Funding

Funding (through a MINIMUM $1,000 housing credit) is available for returning Collins residents interested in becoming Peer Mentors. Contact SustainCollins Co-Coordinators Tanjimul Alam (alamt@iu.edu) and Elspeth Hayden (haydene@indiana.edu) for more information, and to apply.

Application

To join SustainCollins, you must first complete the Residential Programs and Services (RPS) housing application. Be sure to answer all Collins-specific questions and indicate your interest in the SustainCollins program. A member of the SustainCollins staff will reach out to you at your IU email address with the additional Resident Agreement detailing membership requirements. Hello! My name is Amelia and I am a freshman currently majoring in Law and Public Policy with a minor in Environmental Science. In addition to being one of the E-Force Co-Chairs, , I am a member of SustainCollins, and a participant in community council. I first got into the environment during high school with my involvement in my school's environmental action club, and since then, it has been my goal to incorporate sustainability into my own and others' lives. In my free time in enjoy listening to music (mainly The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, or Hozier), reading, journaling, or spending time in nature.
