SustainCollins Blind Taste Test

By: Amelia Bucher

Thursday, March 21, 2024

SustainCollins had the opportunity to participate in a blind taste test for IU Dining and Sustain IU. Members were offered two types of chili, one with meat, and another with a plant-based meat.  Once the chili was tasted, a group vote was conducted to decide on which chili was actually the meat based one. The difference was obvious. SustainCollins members were then offered two types of cookies. One cookie was made in the traditional style, and the other was made with all vegan ingredients. This test offered much more varied results, with the group becoming more divided over which cookie was which. The majority did guess which cookie was made with the vegan ingredients, but almost all members agreed that they would enjoy the vegan cookie again.

Although the group guessed which chili was meat based and which cookie was baked with vegan ingredients, the experience allowed for an in-depth discussion of diet on the environment. Almost all members agreed that they would enjoy both the vegetable based chili and vegan cookie again, and left knowing and able to identify easy changes that could be made to limit their personal enviornmental impact by seeking plant-based food options.
