Course Description

Food photography has evolved from the beginnings of photography into its contemporary practices in an ever-expanding communication environment. We will consider three aspects in which food photography situates itself: the commercial, the social, and as a fine art. We will discuss how food, and images of food, reflect social values and mores and shape identity and human relations from the gender/race/class triangle. This is also a practice class and students will learn the basics of shooting photos (exposure, white balance, lighting, composition, and color), some food styling tricks, as well as image post-processing. Regardless of the camera you have, you will gain confidence as a photographer so that you can harness your abilities to create food photos for the goals you have in mind.
