Summer Expeditions classes satisfy the Collins seminar requirement. Expeditions field courses combine class work with off-campus learning in the form of field trips and research, permitting you to engage in focused study at an off-campus site during Summer Sessions. Before beginning the course, you learn the conceptual framework behind the course, as well as foundational skills.

Without question, the Sierra class has been the most joyful part of my teaching experience at IU. The opportunity to bring a group of intro-level students—some of whom have never traveled outside of the Midwest and many of whom have never taken a geology class—to explore one of the most spectacular geological environments in the world…It can be a life-changing experience for both students and faculty.
